What Republicans lack in competence, they make up for in expensive campaign ads, right?
Except… when trying to smear the opponent of Susan Collins, who is on the ballot in Portland, Maine, they booked expensive tv ad time in Portland, Oregon, telling voters about a Senate candidate from a different state, they can’t even vote for.
This is the reason you hire the skilled people.

One of the patterns I’ve seen with people using Claude for programming is:
A programmer in the past looked at a tradeoff space and decided to make a common operation fast and an uncommon operation slow.
Claude lacks proper context of the use of the software but spots a pattern that looks like things it’s training set has flagged as slow and so points to the slow path as a bottleneck.
The user asks for a test case and Claude provides a simple microbenchmark that triggers the slow path.
Now that it’s confirmed as slow, the user asks a ‘agentic’ harness to explore the design space and optimise for the benchmark. The swarm of Claude instances makes plausible changes to the code and reports back with a modified version that passes the test suite and improves the microbenchmark.
The test suite doesn’t exhaustively cover all possible race conditions and so the new version may include subtle concurrency bugs. It also probably makes the common case slower and so is a regression overall.
I don’t know if other LLMs encourage this flow, but I’ve seen it several times from people using Claude.
I suspect Linus’ recent embarrassing interaction with his kernel’s virtual memory code may have been an example of this pattern. It’s very easy to do with an LLM because each step appears to be a demonstrable improvement. It comes with an objective benchmark, it passes all of the tests. Unfortunately, software often depends on a load of extrinsic knowledge that the LLM is trying to infer from a load of likely misleading data points.
@david_chisnall Claude is the number one cause of AI psychosis, I think. Every lunatic I've seen in recent memory has been a Claude user. Where are the ChatGPT loonies and the rest? it's just Claude-Claude-Claude-Claude in people's mouths that are public speaking about how amazing it is when it's obviously them that have lost their mind.
We want to remember the good internet. The cat clips, the funny family tales, the great comic feats. The internet that makes us laugh.
That's the internet we grew up on and the the one we want want to be a part of. We know that the world wide web is not always a great place.
Its like we are full of contradictions. One moment you're laughing at a tortoise enjoying a fresh lettuce leaf, the next you stumble across some heinous hateful trash. Thats what it feels like to be online today. Your brain cannot stand this whiplash.

Maybe a little tip for mods/admins who deal with the spam wave:
If hacked accounts appeal, first do a forced password reset before you allow the appeal
This is to make sure their passwords have been changed and their accounts won't be used in the attack again
So far all indicators point to stolen passwords and not tokens
@stux @Jerry made a script to do that: https://infosec.exchange/@jerry/117457041484080186

In physics, curved spacetime is the mathematical model in which, with Einstein's theory of general relativity, gravity naturally arises, as opposed to being described as a fundamental force in Newton's static Euclidean reference frame. Objects move along geodesics—curved paths determined by the local geometry of spacetime—rather than being influenced directly by distant bodies.

Hurray for lazy days. I hope this morning's appointment goes well
Love & hugs 🥰🥰🤗🤗
@HeatherMJ
Evening lovely, it was just a quick scan on my kidneys.
I ended up going into the shop afterwards as they were really short staffed 😕
So I'm just playing with my new phone this evening.
I hope you've had a good Sunday 🤗
@DoubleTreble
Good morning, DT! Enjoy your lazy day. I’m hoping mine will be the same. Nothing planned except a walk in the sun, once it rises and warms things up.
Hugs! 🤗 🥰 🥰 🤗
We now note that that we do not waive our attribution requirements for Spritely Goblins, which are present in Apache v2 (and for that matter, CC BY, CC BY-SA, and most FOSS licenses) https://codeberg.org/spritely/goblins/pulls/998/files
So if you train on our codebase, you have to retain attribution, which we consider the most important requirement to motivate development of technology in the commons.
If, somehow, you are using a statistical soup which has no way to preserve attribution, well, we don't permit or approve of dropping such a requirement, and actually, the licenses we use never have.
Thanks also @davidrevoy for inspiring adding such a notice https://framapiaf.org/@davidrevoy/117440226629383529

Btw I thought I heard @bkuhn saying (but with their post-hoc permission, naming them now to clarify) that nobody cares about attribution requirements (and particularly not enforcing them). But to me, attribution is what I care about MORE than any other licensing requirements, more than copyleft "share-alike" style provisions, etc.
If you feel similarly, it would be good to hear on this thread. Perhaps even copying a similar notice into your project is a good idea.
@cwebber Attribution is pretty much the only thing I ever cared about (and I still care about it, very much). I also do not believe prominent people when they say they "don't care" about attribution. Like, really? So if someone had never credited your work your entire career and/or claimed it for themselves, you think you'd be in the same position as you are now? Or is attribution only important when you're on your way up the ladder?
I have a *lot* of feelings on attribution, in fact.
@cwebber Honestly, for a more negative take, any prominent individual in a community who says that "attribution doesn't matter" immediately sets off alarm bells in my head.

How wide is a crème egg nowadays?
9 inches is 22.86cm
a regular 40g Cadbury Creme Egg is 3.5 cm wide
a small plastic fill-able egg is about 5 cm to 5.5 cm wide
a normal medium-sized chocolate Easter egg is about 8 cm wide
none of these should pose a challenge to a seasoned anal toy veteran.

I keep looking for active discussions on Masto; maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places?
I'm so much more used to socmed sites where folks talk to each other. It feels so silent and isolated here. Why??? I know there are humans around; my feed is full of posts but none of them seem to have any comments. It's just a bunch of folks shouting into the void.
Is it just a difference in culture here? Or am I just missing all the action somehow?
@Verati404 so, as you know, mastodon is a software that a bunch of different people are all running on their own websites.
Because the websites are "federated" you can see my posts and I can see yours, we can talk over the network.
But, because you can only see the parts of the network that you're federated with, you're not going to see most of the conversations, because you can't see the people commenting on posts if your server doesn't fetch their posts already.
@Verati404 there's been some software upgrades trying to fix this, but they don't all work all the time because some people's federated websites aren't even running mastodon, because ovb, you don't have to, to talk into the network.
@Verati404 Beyond the structural issues causing you to not see comments that do exist, there is both a strong problem all over the network with the world's most clueless reply guys, and people who are too anxious about contributing to the reply guy problem to say anything to anyone.
Generally the solution is to post things using a couple of relevant hashtags and follow some hashtags so you can find more people and thus weave your server better into the network
@Verati404 I highly recommend you start by following some extremely active extroverts, (not all of whom are named Alice, I promise!)
@Binder (boosts people from all over fedi so new uses can find each other)
@alice@lgbtqia.space (generally friendly and cool, posts locksport videos)
@Alice@beige.party (the funniest user on beige party, the premier shit posting instance)
@ai6yr (posts about ham radio, the weather, repairing things, and generally news, usually has a well-run comment section)
@pencilears
Hmm, they are only following 183 people, and most of them not active.
@ai6yr I think they're still pretty new, they may have posted this and then gone out to touch grass like in ye olden days
@pencilears @ai6yr Yeah, I made this account a long time ago and then wound up on other places like bluesky, but I do like Masto so I want to give it a second earnest try. (And yeah, had to go grab groceries real quick when I realized I was out of milk and sugar.)
@Verati404 Follow people. Follow hashtags. Even randomly. It might appear that after few days you do not really like a person you follow. Or what is being tagged. Then unfollow.
To the list of recommended accounts I would add @dgar and @catsalad. They are very active. However, I cannot promise you will like the activity 🤭
And for some good feeling artsy content, check @cmconseils and @Natasha_Jay.
My name is #Dgar and I endorse this message.
My name is #️⃣CatSalad and I meow.
@catsalad
My name is @Natasha_Jay and this appears to be a 4am 😴💤 group hug but why not?
@Natasha_Jay @catsalad @dgar @agturcz @cmconseils Nice to meet you all!
@Verati404 @Natasha_Jay @catsalad @dgar @agturcz @cmconseils
I am @amro and am only reading this because I have a weak bladder 🙂↕️
@pencilears @Verati404 @Binder @alice@lgbtqia.space @Alice@beige.party @ai6yr
Also @RickiTarr (though she's been quiet this month.)
@Verati404 There's loads of lively talk here, you just have to be following enough folks who are active!
I'd recommend @benroyce whose hilariously spicy rants about the complacency of American voters often deserve to be printed off and flyposted everywhere.
@ai6yr for obscure real-time OSINT that often beats news orgs to the story.
@TheBreadmonkey whose almost Shakespearian soliloquies about random shit that's happening to him will have you in stitches.
And that's just blokes called Ben! 👀
The Russian satellite COSMOS 2612 has been hovering near the U.S. ICEYE-X36 imaging satellite in recent months. It was reported to be within a few km from ICEYE-X36 yesterday, at ~550 km altitude.
COSMOS 2612 was launched on 16 Apr 2026.
ICEYE satellites also provides imagery to Ukraine’s military.

The ICEYE X series of satellites are X-band SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) microsatellites, designed by the Finnish ICEYE startup company.
ICEYE-X36 is owned by ICEYE USA.
At least four Russian military satellites were stalking ICEYE-X36 in May of this year.
ICEYE also provides imagery to Ukraine’s military.

According to calculations by Dr Marco Langbroek, the COSMOS 2612 (aka KOSMOS 2612) and ICEYE-X36 are already with 1-2 km of each other.
By early morning tomorrow, KOSMOS 2612 might approach ICEYE-X36 to within a few meters.
"That is very worrisome. This RPO (Rendezvous and Proximity Operation) is completely non-consensual.
So I wonder and worry whether we are perhaps watching a first actual on-orbit ASAT attack in the making here."
Or perhaps a jamming exercise?
https://sattrackcam.blogspot.com/2026/10/kosmos-2612-and-iceye-x36-worrisome-cat.html

According to this simulation at Orbital Radar, the Russian military satellite COSMOS 2612 will come within 21 m of the U.S. imaging satellite ICEYE-X36 at 10:26 UTC tomorrow 18 October 2026.
Update from Dr Langbroek -
"Based on new orbital elements for both ICEYE-X36 and KOSMOS 2612, there seems to have been a close approach early on the 18th, possibly around 1:35 UTC, to within a few 100 m or possibly (much) closer. There are indications in the orbital elements for KOSMOS 2612 that it made one or more small maneuvers around that time.
No indications that ICEYE-X36 was affected/disturbed in its orbit. Affect on functionality - only users can tell us."
Update: Cosmos 2612 appears to have maneuvered away from the ICEYE-X36 satellite after its close approach yesterday.
As of 7:32 UTC, their separation was ~292 km.

@floreana
Soltanto Mary Poppins è praticamente perfetta sotto ogni aspetto.
PS: Avete visto? "mene", e non "me ne". Non sono perfetto, ma "mene" frega.
@floreana tu figurati che a volte ho pensato di mettere su uno streaming di me che gioco, titolato «Watch how I suck at videogames»
@floreana sì.
So today I took a friend who is stage 4 to lunch . Because food and listening are my love language and I am goddam old and we won’t talk about attrition rates in my peer group but whatthefuckever. It hurts because she is a truly good person and the unfairness of it overwhelms me.
But the REALLY wrong part?
The source is environmental. She got tested for a genetic link and it wasn’t that. Weird fast moving kidney cancer and probably PFAS related.
This makes not the 1st, 2nd, but THIRD person I have been close to who got a terminal diagnosis from chemical exposure. One military burn pit, one Roundup/glyphosate and now PFAS.

RE: https://wandering.shop/@cstross/117450071591623123
This happens: grifters build a copy of a book, slap a *40% OFF* medallion on the cover, then list it for sale under a name that looks like the author, but with a unicode homograph replacing a letter. This is close enough to show up in bookstore searches, so a bunch of readers get sucked in the 40% OFF label and give money to a crook.
As soon as my publisher tells Amazon or Apple or whoever they yank it off sale, but by then it's too late.

#WritersCoffeeClub – 16th Oct. How do you feel about people reading your works without buying a personal copy?
Long-standing publishing lore is, there are roughly four readers per book sold. This includes library loans, second-hand sales, and friends borrowing books. This is normal.
I don't get mad at warez sites (most downloads go unread, most readers wouldn't have bought one), but I *DO* get enraged by pirates who re-list and sell my ebooks on amazon (they're stealing income from authors).
@cstross Funny how Amazon can’t use all their inference logic to spot these bastards.
@BashStKid I’m not sure it’s still happening—I got hit by it 3 years ago, it’s possible they tightened things up since then.
@robryk What they’re doing is impersonating the author’s identity on the storefront where the customers see it, but creating a separate billing account that the pirate uses for receiving payments. The book title is the same, but because their book is cheaper many customers buy it instead of the real one.
This process is semi-automated—someone did this to "A Conventional Boy" in its launch week.
@robryk So they can set up a merchant account under a name the author/their publisher won't notice and stealthily divert funds to it.
@robryk Search-by-title generally looks for synonyms and close misspellings (the retailer wants to maximize sales). But you *don’t* want to do approximate/fuzzy matching on your supplier names in your inventory and accounts payable database!
I emphasize: this problem isn’t the retailer’s direct fault, any more than a SQL injection attack is. They should fix it, but the problem exists because of criminals.
One thing I notice between Australia and the rest of the world is the view on 'outdoor cats'.
Lots of overseas accounts happily post photos of a cat outside in the world.
In Australia, especially over the last decade or so, an outdoor cat is now considered a problem. Especially in my city (Canberra) where laws are slowly banning outdoor cats.
For us it is primarily an issue of the impact of an voracious carnivore on the existing ecosystem.
@troberts I guess it depends a lot on whether cats are part of the existing ecosystem or not?
Here in Italy e.g. free cats (so called stray elsewhere) are a legally protected category and as predators fulfill an important role in keeping the ecosystem stable. They do get chipped and neutered to control their population, since they don't really have predators (and they receive food also from humans, of course. because cats).
@troberts and then, especially outside the cities, you get people like his Grace NotOurCat, that we thought was part of the local free cat colony, and then when he got hurt¹ we found out that no, he wasn't, he was just eating from the colony feeding points.
¹ in a very natural way. by being bitten by another cat over an old not-completely-healed bite
these days I think he has been eating more from the bowl we provide and less from the ones he has no right to. but we're not sure
@valhalla Yeah, that's right about the ecosystem.
They have been devastating here, I suppose partially because before European settlement, Australia didn't have a nimble predator that feeds on small animals (other than various birds of prey).
@troberts yeah. and I'm not 100% sure they are a good thing even in the Americas, where I believe they already had similar predators, but still they have been introduced recently.
here in the old world however they have been present for millennia, and stuff have already stabilized down with them present for a long time.
FWIW I have fond memories of being outside and my pet cat appearing on the scene from somewhere, fresh from adventures.
On the other hand, good old Momo (the pre-Pippin cat) brought their fair share of half-alive, winged creatures* inside to die.
( * I could have said "birds", but I didn't. )
I guess the key point is that if you post a cute picture of a cat, I will still click the 'favourite' star button.
But at least 10% of that star is me judging you and your cat from afar.

Elon Musk now claims it is Trump who has restricted Ukraine's use of Musk's satellite internet.
If that is true, a NATO partner is now preventing Ukraine from leveraging a key technology against the Russian invasion.
Please ask Secretary General Mark Rutte, if a NATO partner can side with the enemy and still remain a NATO partner.
This cockatoo was becoming much tamer coming right up to the window to watch everything that I did on the table. Decided to try and feed him and he took to it very quickly to my delight.
An old dirty looking corella that had been digging for worms, was very curious and realised that this was a very good way to scoff lots of food but he didn’t have the same confidence as the cockatoo. Out of jealousy he kept attacking the cockatoo who would drive him back every time.
One day I might get both of them to feed like this! 😊👍
