A quiet morning yesterday, followed by an afternoon in the shop, it was another busy one, which is good for us. We had a new full time manager join us at the beginning of the month, she seems very competent, although she's never worked in charity retail before, sadly I'm picking up a little bit of, let's call it tension from one of the part time staff members. Which isn't going to help her settle in. Having been in similar positions in my working life I'm trying to be as supportive as possible.
Our friend who couldn't come on Monday, messaged last night to say she's hoping to get to us later this morning 🤗

The skirt is finally nearly complete. The pleats are done, edges pin stitched. The pockets are on. Side seams, waistband and hem to do. I could do with being a bit quicker. I stitched most of the morning at the café with friends and then back home for more stitching on the skirt. A nice way to spend the day 😊

I've been on every side of that new manager thing: I've seen a colleague not ready to change and a manager unwilling to attempt to learn from the people with more experience. In truth, I've probably been that manager too, on both sides. It's never easy. Best of luck while things settle into some new sort of equilibrium 🙂
I can now confirm that our study blind has 66 slats and I have 132 4mm long offcuts to prove it! At least it now fits and goes up and down, so yesterday counts as a success!

Working in IT results in some odd requests sometimes.
Today, I had someone turn up with a rubber stamp which had to be destroyed.
Now, I do have a hammer at my desk, and we keep a range of other tools, so it was kinda logical (and look, what IT person is going to turn down the opportunity to hit something with a hammer?).

@klegdixal yes, I believe 3/4 are contract soldiers. But it is unknown how many are tricked or forced into signing a contract, so the number of volunteer soldiers is probably much lower.

@Annacats I voted for the secure carrier, but when I worked 80 miles away for eight months I did have a commuting cat that traveled with me to stay at a short term rental apartment a couple of nights every week.
He curled up on the dashboard of my Prius and slept for most of the journey, and went to look out of the rear window the rest of the time. He was a very calm older cat, quite unlike the lightning demon on elastic he was as a kitten!

Ad oggi sono quasi 25 anni che ripeto sempre le stesse cose ma non serve a nulla ripetere sempre le stesse cose se dall'altra parte ci sono i javascript che fanno le lucette colorate sullo schermo e i framework coi plugin che ti fanno fare il sito web anche se sei tecnicamente incompetente.
Fortunatamente nessuno scambia più un lettore CD-ROM per il porta tazza del caffè, se non altro perchè non esistono quasi più i lettori CD-ROM; per il resto nel tempo è cambiato l'aspetto delle cose ma non la sostanza: se costruisci una cosa male, quella cosa poi si rompe, non importa quanto luccica l'incarto.

Personalmente ho un bagaglio enorme di esperienze sociali e familiari che mi hanno fatto un gran male. Nel mio caso quando ero bambina non era colpa di nessuno, era una situazione che nessuno aveva i mezzi per capire, invece qui c'è una che non ha assolutamente idea di come si fa il genitore ma sta dando un magnifico esempio di cosa NON fare.
(Sì, parlo per esperienza personale. Per esempio una volta mia madre mi stava picchiando e ha colpito un mobile rompendosi una vena del polso e quindi ancora adesso mi accusa di essere stata così cattiva che l'ho mandata al pronto soccorso.)

Will I talk about Linux? Of course. But I'll also talk about BSD, illumos, monocultures, and why we should never forget that there are always other paths worth exploring.
Linux proved that an alternative was possible. It would be a shame if that alternative became, in turn, a new imposition.
Because monocultures are a problem, even in the Open Source world. And because freedom isn't about everyone doing things the same way, but about being able to choose a different way.

With all due respect: this seems somewhat inconsistent with the recently introduced rule to not promote use of AI.

@fuzzy That's a fair point, and I understand your concern.
The rule doesn't prohibit discussing AI, using it, or expressing positive opinions about it.
My concern is that much of today's AI ecosystem is controlled by a handful of corporations whose business models encourage increasing dependence on their services.
And that's exactly what my talk was about: avoiding monocultures, preserving alternatives, and remaining independent.
Freedom of choice also means being able to make a cup of tea without asking a corporate AI service how to do it.
But there's another important aspect: the community itself.
I don't want BSD Cafe to become yet another battleground.
Today, people can discuss ZFS on Linux versus ZFS on FreeBSD without attacking each other. Discussions around AI, however, often become extremely heated, with people on both sides fiercely defending their positions.
I want BSD Cafe to remain a place where people can disagree respectfully, feel welcome, and enjoy being part of the community.
Open-mindedness doesn't mean uncritical acceptance, but it certainly means respecting different opinions.
And there's something else worth remembering: BSD Cafe isn't a single-user instance. There are hundreds of people here, each with their own ideas, experiences, and expectations.
My responsibility is to listen to them, understand their concerns, and try to keep this community a peaceful, welcoming, and positive place.
Every decision will make some people happy and disappoint others. That's unavoidable.
I'm not claiming to have all the answers, and I'm always willing to reconsider things.
Unfortunately, there's no universal answer to this particular question.

For some reason, a few of my clients’ e-commerce sites break after updating PHP. I can’t share any more details at the moment, as they’re still working on it.
On a completely unrelated note, two customers of my clients insisted on having a call, both involving the cybersecurity department of the massive corporate group they belong to. Wasted time… but ok.
One thanked us for responding so quickly. The other asked why their server hadn’t already been secured.
I explained that I had already applied the mitigations and installed the patch just ten minutes after it became available.
Their response: “You need to review your processes, because servers must be patched before the vulnerability is publicly disclosed.”
I ended the call laughing while eating a plate of tortellini.

Prima di portarlo a casa ha dovuto fare un corso su come rianimare i neonati.
Il bimbo è a casa ma con un sondino su per il naso per nutrirlo.
Però se è tranquillo mangia anche dalla tetta della mamma.

A me pare che questa crisi causata dallo sciopero dei camionisti non faccia che evidenziare la schizopatia di un sistema che di suo è insostenibile e schizzopatico.
Il motivo per cui le merci viaggiano su camion che hanno serbatoi da 2000 litri di benzina e non su rotaia è che se fino a ieri qualcuno avesse osato dire che forse non era conveniente muoverle su ruota i camionisti sarebbero insorti e avrebbero scioperato perchè se non muovono il camion muoiono di fame.
Il che ha anche senso ma capisci che se il tuo non morire di fame si basa sul proseguire fin che puoi consumando risorse che ad un certo punto finiscono, non fai che posticipare il morire di fame.
Ora c'è un momento "camionista incontra realtà", dove la realtà è: il governo che hai votato perchè ti prometteva falsamente che sarbbe sempre andato avanti tutto normale, ha avuto a sua volta il suo momento "governo incontra realtà".
Intanto che tra il governo e il camionista un poco alla volta elaborano il fatto che la realtà è dura e ostile, noialtri possiamo ragionare su una cosa: i pomodori in ottobre in Veneto sono (per il momento) fuori stagione.
Avere pomodori freschi in Veneto in ottobre implica uno sforzo per trasportarli.
Il costo di questo sforzo può ricadere: sul consumatore, in questo caso il pomodoro è un prodotto di lusso per ricchi.
Sul rivenditore: in questo caso o il rivenditore trova pomodori consegnati a poco prezzo oppure va in perdita.
Sul trasportatore: in questo caso il trasportatore o trova un modo poco costoso per trasportarli oppure va in perdita.
Sull'ambiente: in questo caso l'ambiente non può fare nulla se non supportare fin che può il geniale modo poco costoso di trasportare i pomodori fino in Veneto.
Il problema è che l'ambiente ad un certo punto non riesce più ad ammortizzare il costo, fondamentalmente perchè si esauriscono le risorse (per esempio di benzina o di aria respirabile).
A questo punto si ritorna al discorso di cui sopra: tolto l'ambiente chi ammortizza il costo?
(Un tempo qui a Verona le clementine si vedevano il giorno di Santa Lucia, come un regalo di lusso.)
Io sono un sostenitore dei trasporti via mare.
Non bisogna aver fatto la Bocconi per capire che se sulla tratta Gioia Tauro - Genova (o Brindisi - Ravenna) una nave consuma quanto 100 camion, ma ne trasporta 300, è un affare.
E come bonus c'è meno traffico e meno manutenzione da fare alle autostrade (e ai camion).

Donald Trump's heavily damaged star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is decorated with appropriate words in blue and pink paint of some kind. It says "KID FUCKER," "FELON," "FUCK TRUMP," and some other stuff I can't make out. There are also stickers that say "RACIST" or possibly RAPIST, I can't tell and in any case he is both. There's one with a No Kings emblem and another that says "FASCIST PIG."
This is from journalist Johnny Palmadessa, who has been documenting daily vandalism at Trump's star for months.

@coso_come_se_chiama di tutta questa faccenda l'antipatia verso Zelensky negli ambienti di compagni è l'aspetto che ho sempre trovato più bizzarro. Intendo, la situazione è complicata e posso capire che riguardo alla guerra nascano varie posizioni più o meno fondate e più o meno condivisibili, non mi scandalizzo affatto. Ma questo fatto di considerare regolarmente Z. una via di mezzo fra un pupazzo e un feroce dittatore (e non parlo di editoriali o manifesti ma di chiacchiere al baretto) mi sembra il segno di quanto i giri 'nostri' siano permeabili a una certa propaganda.
@enverdemichelis i motivi sono svariati e il discorso lungo. Una volta qualcun* qui elencò per punti le casistiche che portano alcuni combagni a essere accondiscendenti col regime, forse @gino. C'entrano sicuramente il sogno di un mondo multipolare (alla faccia dell'internazionalismo) e il mito dell'Urss che non tramonta mai

Detto questo, non potrò mai comprendere come persone intelligenti possano pensare questa stronzata ma tant'è.
