Oh no!
"Margaret Hamilton, a profoundly influential computer scientist best known for leading the software engineering team at MIT during NASA’s Apollo program, died on Sep. 30. She was 90.
A computing pioneer who authored over 130 publications, Hamilton helped to establish software engineering as a dedicated discipline."
We all remember her from these iconic pictures.

"Margaret Hamilton's life’s work was recognized with many awards and honors, including the 2016 Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, whose citation noted: “Hamilton defined new forms of software engineering and helped launch an industry that would forever change human history. Her software architecture led to giant leaps for humankind, writing the code that helped America set foot on the moon.”"

July 18, 2019 - Google created this tribute to Margaret Hamilton with 1.4-square-mile portrait of Margaret Hamilton created with 107,000 mirrors at the Ivanpah Solar Facility in the Mojave Desert positioned to reflect the light of the moon, instead of the sun.
Amazing!

Margaret Hamilton obit at the NY Times.
Mentions the incident during the Apollo 11 landing when Buzz Aldrin flipped a switch, that caused a CPU overload. The software survived because Hamilton had anticipated and simulated such a scenario and had added logic to prioritize essential tasks over others.
Paul Curto, who nominated Hamilton for a NASA Space Act Award, called Hamilton's work "the foundation for ultra-reliable software design."

Shown in these pictures: amount of code my boss vibecodes on an average Tuesday, being equally proud of "his" work 🥲
Canadian Premiere-elect Paul St-Pierre Plamondon of Quebec, who won the general election on Monday, in his victory speech said he dreamed of an independent Quebec, and immediately drew support from Trump puppeteer Elon Musk.
If Quebec became an independent country, its 9 million population would make it smaller than Sweden Greece, and Hungary — and much easier to bully from The White House — which might be the reason Plamondon also said independence was not his most immediate priority.
@randahl I don't think so. I heard he promised (no politician fulfill what they promised) for the referendum once Trump is no longer POTUS, but they may as well di whatever they what having majority of seats. Some politicians promise for a future that might never come, avoiding accountability of their promises.
I sincerely hope separatists from Alberta and Quebec doesn't cause too much trouble in federal politics
@epistomai @randahl I also heard that they would wait for Trump to be out to eventually organise a referendum (called a 'neverendum' there b/c it never passes).
The size of the population should not matter in these cases. There are far smaller independent countries that are doing fine - sometimes much better than the big ones in fact.
@randahl Wouldn’t it also be a brilliant idea if Californians and New Yorkers were to secede from the US? I’m just asking.
@randahl I saw that PQ had announced that no referendum before trumpery left office, according to local media...
@randahl Québécois dreaming of independence are often being unrealistic. An actually independent Québec would, for starters, likely be significantly smaller, because plenty of people there don't want it -- such as many or most of the First Nations people who, unarguably, were there first. Violent separation is a childish fantasy. Peaceful separation would require substantial compromise on all sides.
@randahl Separately, no sane or sensible person should care what Elmo has to say about anything, unless it's saying he's finally getting the therapy he desperately needs.
"Tutto è un compromesso: più qualcosa è sicuro, più limitante o scomodo è, in generale, etc. Spesso, le persone scoprono che il problema con gli strumenti che vedono consigliati, è che sono semplicemente troppo difficili da utilizzare!"
Well aware I asked this a bit back but nothing really came of it. And now I *really* need to get it going.
Need an acronym for a system which does admin, repair tracking, materials (purchasing+usage), and customer management. Doesn't need to cover all that, obvs.
One syllable. Dead easy to remember. Nice short acronym which doesn't clash with existing IT acronyms. Company's called Hotfox.
Come on Fedi, you're good at this. Any ideas please?
@stefano bssg?
@stefano I have a very strong opinion about application written in bash. 🫣
I avoid it by any chance
@resmo ok!

And, more, I'm sure it'll still produce working web sites in 20 years from now - without having to change configs, etc.
@justine in part it is 😉 But it's mostly related to blog posts.
Luckily, the Wayback Machine can help, here.

Somebody's not so secret stash
Peekaboo!
@dillyd It's only not secret because you're significantly taller than a squirrel, even when they're standing on two legs. Nobody's going to *expect* to find a bunch of acorns in a stump, so they're not going to hop up there to look. Then, in winter, they don't have to dig through frozen soil to get at them.
@dillyd What? No #LichenSubscribe?
Oh, yes, on that branch that sits diagonally across the upper left! A grand slam!
Yes I do wish dictators dead.
No I do not feel any shame for it.
@stux I was glad when the Reagans died. There's nothing wrong with recognizing that some people make the world better by no longer bring in it.
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 has been awarded to -
Henri B. Kagan - Université Paris-Sud, France
Kenso Soai - Tokyo University of Science, Japan
“for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis”

The discoveries by the two Nobel laureates in Chemistry deal with chirality - left-handed vs right-handed organic molecules.
Both mirrored variants are created in chemical reactions but living cells contain left-handed amino acids for proteins and right-handed sugars for DNA and RNA.
Molecules with the wrong chirality in drugs are ineffective, sometimes harmful.
Kagan and Soai laid the path for chemical reactions that create molecules with a single chirality.

Why does life on Earth exclusively use left-handed molecules (for proteins)? That's another area of research addressed by astrophysicists and astrochemists.
Theories include -
Polarized starlight or radiation in star-forming regions
Magnetic fields on Earth
Spin-polarized electrons
Evolutionary amplification of an initial imbalance

https://www.insee.fr/fr/statistiques/2591293?sommaire=2591397
@oblomov
@GustavinoBevilacqua
@GustavinoBevilacqua
@GustavinoBevilacqua
@GustavinoBevilacqua
@GustavinoBevilacqua
It’s the beginning of October, and emergency power cuts are already returning to parts of Ukraine.
Starting tomorrow, they will be introduced in several regions following russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.
Tonight is shaping up to be another terrifying night for Ukraine.
Russian aircraft carrying missiles are reportedly already in the air, and dozens of Shahed drones are already attacking the country.
Yet another sleepless night ahead for millions of Ukrainians.

The savagery of the russians knows no bounds precisely because European neighbours have failed to help defend Ukrainian airspace. The less Europe does to defend Ukraine, the more these inhumans feel encouraged to disrupt, sabotage, and eventually wage open war against Europe.
Hello everyone! 👋 My name is Regina, I am a folk musician playing the nyckelharpa (a Swedish bowed instrument with sympathetic strings) based in Germany. When I'm not playing tunes or travelling to a gig, I can most likely be found in nature, growing plants, baking bread, doing pottery, befrieding cats or crafting things. It's lovely to be here and I'm looking forward to get to know lots of cool people here on Mastodon! Feel free to ask me anything! 🌱

@regina_nyckelharpista Welcome! What a fascinating-looking instrument! I must try to find audio of it being played.
I hope you enjoy Mastodon and the people here as much as I do.
@kateiacy Thank you! You can find my music on bandcamp (https://aklejafolk.bandcamp. com) or if you want, you can see me/us play it on YouTube (https://youtube.com/@aklejafolk) 💚
The nyckelharpa is a folk instrument from Sweden 🇸🇪 with a long standing tradition there. "Nyckelharpa" is a Swedish word, "nyckel" meaning "key" and "harpa" being a general term for a stringed instrument. Its key features (hah, see what I did there?) are the sympathetic strings and a keybox full of wooden keys. Some translate it into English to "keyed fiddle" 🗝️ 🎻 "viola de teclas" in Spanish or "viola d'amore a chiavi" in Italian - although it is not a fiddle or viola ;)
How it works: I produce the sound with a bow on the strings, like on any other bowed instrument, but instead of touching the strings with the fingers of my left hand and pushing them down on a fretboard or fingerboard to play a melody, I press a key. The key moves a little wooden tangent to the string and tada, the note changes 🎉 The magical sound of the nyckelharpa is created from its sympathetic strings (usually 12) which are enhancing every note I play on the four melody strings.
If you want to hear some nyckelharpa music, you're welcome on my duos bandcamp https://aklejafolk.bandcamp.com or search for "Akleja" wherever you like to stream music. More names you can look for there are Josefina Paulson, Hazelius Hedin, Emilia Amper, Väsen, Daniel Pettersson / Sotali, Erik Rydvall - there are so many FANTASTIC players out there! 😭
The instrument pictured here was made by Mats Wester.

Maybe the best two loaves I ever baked??
Vete och rag (wheat and rye) out of Kenny Jakobsson's book "Surdeg för alla" (sourdough for everyone). Nice book!!
Baked in a ceramic bread cloche, recommend!
Today was a perfect day. Cue Lou Reed, and brace yourselves for some unbridled positivity.
Starting with a naturalist walk with my son on a favorite path that included this boardwalk.
#PerfectDay
We turned a corner and came across this gentle rain of fall leaves.
We saw wild cucumbers, sleeping bees, galls, flowers, slime molds, and mushrooms, including our first shaggy inkcap of the year.
I came home and put on my bike shorts and went out again with my husband. We had a picnic under a willow tree with this cute cuckoo wasp. The forecast was for all cloudy all day, but the sky totally cleared.
We were sitting at a pair of picnic tables. A white haired lady approached us. We smiled and said bonjour. She didn't even acknowledge us, just set to work dragging the second table several feet away, then sat facing away from us. The cool thing about a perfect day is that you can just laugh off weird stuff like that. We were still laughing about it hours later. "Man, that lady with the picnic table!"
Continuing on the bike ride, even the undergrowth was showing fall colors and glowing in the sunshine. (Don't worry, we didn't touch it)
On the way home we took an unfamiliar path and came across an amazing little park that we'll definitely visit again in the near future.
We got home and chatted with some neighbors who were outside. Last week we went to the birthday party of one of the kids but left before the opening of the gifts. Today the dad told us he wished he had taken a photo of the kid's face when he opened our gift. He likes rocks, and we gave him a big blue stained and polished geode. I guess he liked it 😊
Then we continued to enjoy the wonderful weather, which had now clouded over again, with drinks and snacks in the back yard. Enjoyed some more wildlife.
Then I came in and changed into some comfy sweatpants. Reached into the pocket and realized I had washed them with an acorn. Because I can't resist picking up cute seeds and putting them in my pockets.
Now I'm comfy and listening to Brahms. Have a wonderful evening, friends.
I brought an acorn home to my wife the other day. She was unimpressed, but apologetically allowed me to add it to a shelf of nature treasure (cool rocks, shells, sticks and the like) with an air of indifference.
I never saw many acorns as a kid - we had maple trees and lots of pine, but no oak - so they're a treat when I find them.
@dicenbuttons everybody needs a nature shelf and a place for their trinkets. Acorns are nice.
@dillyd Bonjour! <pulling up my digital picnic table to yours> thank you for taking us along. Another beautiful thread.
@dillyd I used to play his Intermezzos, very dramatic, yet calm. I have sand in my cuffs, back in the land of chestnuts and acorns 🍂
@dillyd It is so nice to hear about you enjoying a beautiful day in nature, one of my favorite things 😊
🧵 La morsa di Putin sull’Europa | Gabriele Catania
https://www.valigiablu.it/putin-escalation-ibrida-morsa-europa/
Penne lisce edizione caro carburante.
