Flu season has started early this year.
The dominant strain so far is (H1N1)pdm09.
Health experts recommend not to wait to get the vaccine.
FYI - This season, the new U.S.-approved mRNA flu vaccine is available to adults 50 and older.

The early start to the flu season is across most countries in the northern hemisphere.
Last year, a new variant of H3N2, called subclade K, emerged; it had many mutations that made people more vulnerable to it.
This year, the H1N1 mutation that is worrying researchers is G155E, detected in 13 of 17 H1N1 samples in Seattle, which is "less well recognized by pre-existing human antibodies."

@AkaSci are these new mutations included in the vaccines we will get around november?
@f4grx
The vaccines are available now.
"This year, both the H3N2 and the influenza B component of the vaccine are well-matched to what’s currently circulating. As for H1N1, if strains containing the G155E mutation dominate the season, the vaccine might not be particularly well-matched, Bloom says, although he points out that it’s still too early to tell.
Even if not perfectly aligned with the circulating virus, vaccines can still provide a good degree of protection."

Just realised that I hadn't had a "No AI" in my bio. fixed.
@bbacc @zeppe @RinaldoGiorgetti @carlux
@bbacc @zeppe @RinaldoGiorgetti @carlux
l'approccio diplomatico è stato tentato nel 2014. Abbiamo visto tutti come è finito.
@bbacc @zeppe @RinaldoGiorgetti @carlux
@bbacc @zeppe @RinaldoGiorgetti @carlux
@bbacc @zeppe @RinaldoGiorgetti @carlux
@d10c4n3 @bbacc @zeppe @RinaldoGiorgetti @carlux
guerrafondaio! Mettiti l'elmetto e vai all'attacco!
E allora cosa dobbiamo fare? La terza guerra mondiale?
Armi terribili.
I missili!
I carri armati!
@ju
@oblomov @d10c4n3 @bbacc @RinaldoGiorgetti @carlux
ho un bel po' di cose da dire
1/
Also,
2/
Né ci sono state altre manifestazuoni in quel senso.
@oblomov @bbacc @zeppe @RinaldoGiorgetti @carlux (pigrizia in senso lato)
@d10c4n3 @bbacc @zeppe @RinaldoGiorgetti @carlux

❗️And here we are. Just like expected. A Ukrainian official claimed that during recent talks, US envoys Witkoff and Kushner threatened that Trump could cut off Ukraine from U.S. intelligence if it continued to ignore his requests to stop hitting Russian refineries, Axios tells. The U.S. official denied such a threat was made. #Ukraine

In the upcoming 46 days all our #Mastodon instance domains also needs to be renewed
mstdn.social, masto.ai & mastodon.coffee
Since .ai has a min of 2 years the total amount will be $238.52 USD for all domains
Yesterday also got a mail that unfortunately we didn’t make it for funding via NLNet oof
Anyone maybe any ideas for funding or something like that? Adding a paid option to the network is not an option sorry, it has to be optional❤️

Within a little over 10 days new bills arrive for our servers, media storage and emails and currently we are still a massive €460+ short 😟
Next month we get a decision from NLNet for funding our services that could last us some months
But until then.. please think about helping us out

@stux As someone who donates monthly to you I mean this as well intended as possible, but do enough people use Loops that it’s worth it to continue offering that service? Can you verify you’re getting donations off it? Maybe it’s time to scale something back? I also don’t think it’s inappropriate to charge users for your labor unless they can show they’re unable to contribute. If everyone donate $1 you’d be fine
9 euro.

Trump promised DOGE checks, tariff rebates, and a $5,000 "Trump dividend" if Republicans hold Congress. Most of it was noise. But $500 checks are quietly going out to nearly a million ACA enrollees just weeks before the midterms, framed as refunds for Obamacare overcharges. The fine print may be his most brazen vote-buying scheme yet. https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/trump-bribe-obamacare-overcharge-rebate

Live streaming an execution is all within the realm of “barbaric”
I feel ashamed to be part of the same species as the ones running or actually ruining the US
Wanna bet that YouTube is so hypocritical that this won’t be demonetized
All to please the big orange doo doo daddy
Remember that other terrible terrorist organization that did the exact same thing?
Let that sink in
@stux no, the fact that you have a death sentence at all is the barbaric thing. Livestreaming is not nice, but at least it will be reminding people what they allow the State to do to others.
So how do you plan to celebrate Christmas?
I sure hope you have better plans than Pete Hegseth, who wants to execute a prisoner by military firing squad and livestream it to the nation.
You know… like the terrorist regimes which the US used to be against.
Please vote for a better future on November 3rd.
1/3
For anyone wondering: The Trump administration added death by firing squads to the execution methods back in April.
This entire US administration is like a group of teenage boys drinking and saying
🧑🏻🦱 "he-he…wouldn't it be cool if… like… we killed people… he-he… by firing squad?"
🧒🏼 "Yo bro! That would be sick!"
(in the voice of Beavis and Butthead.)

We received $90 each from the Federal Government today. I recognize that we are being given our own tax dollars to try and influence our vote.
It's not working.
We find it offensive so we turned around and gave the money to someone else who didn't get a bribe and could use the assistance.
I can hardly wait until January when hopefully things change for the better.
@NorcalGma2 I'm curious if/how we'll get our $90 bribe. All our Medicare payments are withheld from our Social Security checks. It won't help much on the $800 monthly increase we saw in Medicare payments this year, but perhaps I can use it to gas up our Toyota Highlander.
@alameth
Ours showed up as a direct deposit.
I’ll be returning my mail-in ballot tomorrow. I can assure everyone that the $90 bribe did not sway my vote at all.
@chessert
I've decided to drop our ballots off at the elections office this time.
@NorcalGma2 Thank you. I won't be getting the $90 myself, but I applaud everyone who donates their "dividend" to something or someone who needs it.
Sadly, there are millions of older Americans who are below the poverty level and the $90 may help them survive in these hard times.
It's deeply insulting that trump thinks that senior votes can be bought for a pittance, or for any price. He thinks that we are as greedy and totally without morals as he is.
@Barbramon1
I sent ours to my sister who has a Medicare advantage plan so she didn't get the bribe.
@NorcalGma2 I also have an advantage plan, so no $90 for me. I am not wealthy, but I am grateful and lucky to have a relatively comfortable existence.
I volunteer at a food pantry, and am saddened to see so many elders who need our services. Am glad to be there for them, but it breaks my heart.

Behold the magnificent Glass Octopus, Vitreledonella richardi.
Marine biologists spotted the elusive glass octopus during an expedition by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, off the remote Phoenix Islands, 5,100 km northeast of Sydney in 2021.
The species gets its name from its nearly-transparent body—you can see straight through to the optic nerve, cylindrical eyes and digestive tract.

The entire 98km-long Curonian Spit is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The southern end is land-linked and protected as Национальный парк «Куршская коса»; it’s off-limits within the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad (the border is closed). The northern Lithuanian end is protected as Kuršių nerijos nacionalinis parkas | Curonian Spit National Park, which must be accessed by boat.
Costs: We took our van on a ferry 600m from Klaipėda to Smiltynė for 46.40 €. There’s an additional 20 € off-season camper toll per entry into the Neringa resort (incld. the settlements of Juodkrantė, Pervalka, Preila and Nida). We rented a small apartment in Nida for a couple of nights given the paucity of overnight 🅿️ options. Daytime 🅿️ may also cost but this varies by season.
The Spit is a depositional sandbar some 17,000 years in the making, with open Baltic Sea beaches backed by dunes to one side (📷1&2) and the generally calmer Curonian Lagoon to the other (📷3&4).

The latest motif of the #JaneCrowfoot #Spiritflora project is coming on with the #ChelseaFlower I really pleased with how pretty this one looks, it wasn't too complicated 😁 so I'm hoping to finish the last three tonight

I'm making progress on the latest motif of the #JaneCrowfoot #Spiritflora project with the #Gillow motif. I have a funny feeling it's going to get a bit challenging, wish me luck 🤞

I managed to make more progress than I thought on the latest motif of the #JaneCrowfoot #Spiritflora project with the #Gillow motif. It's been a challenge, but I'm happy with how it looks so far 😁

After last night when I got my head round the pattern I managed to make more progress on the latest motif of the #JaneCrowfoot #Spiritflora project with the #Gillow motif. It's been a challenge, but I'm happy with how it looks so far 😁
Just a couple of rounds of the frame to do now.
@crochet
#crochet
After giving up on the frame last night, I worked it out this afternoon. I managed to complete the first motif of the #JaneCrowfoot #Spiritflora project with the #Gillow motif. Looking forward to moving onto the next motif and hoping for something a little easier, but I haven't looked at it yet 🤔
I managed to complete several rounds on the latest motif of the #JaneCrowfoot #Spiritflora project #EvelynsFlower motif. So far it's been straightforward fingers crossed 🤞 it's going to stay that way 🤔
Managed to complete the leaves on the latest motif of the #JaneCrowfoot #Spiritflora project #EvelynsFlower motif. So far it's been straightforward fingers crossed 🤞 it's going to stay that way 🤔
I'm moving on to twiddly fiddly bits next
@crochet
#crochet
I've completed two #EvelynsFlower motifs on #JaneCrowfoots #Spiritflora project.
All twiddly fiddly bits are done and the frame it wasn't as difficult as I was thinking, so the next two should be straightforward to finish 😁
I've completed the centre Flower part of three #MarlboroughFlower motifs on #JaneCrowfoots #Spiritflora project.
One has it's frame the other three will have to wait until tonight. 😁
@crochet
#crochet
Completed four of the centre Flower parts of #SunFlower 🌻 motifs on #JaneCrowfoots #Spiritflora project.
One also has it's sunflower petals. I thought it was going to be tough to get to the petal stage, but it was fairly straightforward😁
The leaves and frame for this motif do look difficult as the flower is off centre on the completed motif 🤞🤞
@crochet
#crochet
Completed the first #SunFlower 🌻 motif last night, flower, stems and leaves all attached to the frame.
Three more to go, I'm hoping they'll be a bit easier now I know what to do, and hopefully they'll be a little less wonky 😁😁
@crochet
#crochet
Well, after much head scratching, frogging frustration, and reading the pattern over and over, as well as resorting to the video tutorials, I've finally got to grips with the latest #JaneCrowfoot #spiritofflora motif, it's a bit wonky but blocking will sort that out
🤞😁🤞
Afternoon lovely people 💕💕
I am making slow progress on the latest #JaneCrowfoot #SpiritofFlora motif this one is the #DoubleCarnation
It's taxing my little brain 🧠 but as always I'm very much enjoying the challenge 😄
@DoubleTreble @crochet
They look very complicated and a little spidery. I'm glad you managed to get to grips with them.
@HeatherMJ
🤣🤣
Definitely look spidery Mr DT thought I'd been making Halloween spiders for Bobby 🤣🤣
I'm working on the leaves now and they are easier than the pattern seems which is good 😊
@crochet
#crochet
#JaneCrowfoot
I've progressed the #DoubleCarnation motif a little further, I'm managing to get to grips with the pattern fairly well, managed alot of this while at Knit and Natter this afternoon so my attention wasn't fully on what I was doing, I can't see any errors 🤣🤣
@DoubleTreble @crochet
I’m going to start calling you a wizard with a (crochet) hook.
@DoubleTreble @crochet They are remarkable
@HeatherMJ
🤣🤣🤣
I mean, if you say so, I can't take much credit, the pattern is a #JaneCrowfoot I just follow that 🤷
@DoubleTreble Just follow? You've struggled to get it right and you've succeeded in a clearly tricky pattern. I'm looking forward to seeing the end result

Good evening lovely people 💕💕
Finally finished two of the #DoubleCarnation motifs, the last few frame rounds pretty simple, two more to go, then onto the final #SpiritofFloral motif which looks pretty daunting 🤣🤣
@DoubleTreble
Congrats! That looks impossible to me.
I not going to lie, it was a real challenge to get my head round, but I'm feeling pretty chuffed!
The next one does look really tough though 😕
@DoubleTreble @crochet
That looks pretty daunting to me, so goodness knows what the next one is like! Good luck. I have every confidence

Good evening lovely people 💕💕
Slowly getting there with the #BedfordParkDaisy motifs, for the #SpiritofFlora throw, two have got the flower stems and two have their leaves and flower buds. Once they're all at the leaves and buds stage, I'll be moving on to the frames. Its going to take a while with everything that's going on ATM! But I can pick it up whenever I get stressed 😁😁

#JaneCrowfoot
Good afternoon lovely people 💕💕
Finally finished the four #BedfordParkDaisy motifs, for the #SpiritofFlora throw, including frames. It just needs laying out in a pattern I'm happy with then piecing together before blocking 😁😁
@DoubleTreble @crochet well done DT. 🤗
@skyfire747 @crochet
Thanks Anthony, it feels like quite an achievement 💕
I hope you've had a good day
*huggles* 🤗🤗
@DoubleTreble @crochet @PhoenixSerenity that’s so beautiful! What pattern are you using?
@irene @crochet @PhoenixSerenity
It's a #JaneCrowfoot pattern #SpiritofFlora
This particular motif is called Gillow.
@DoubleTreble
I love your entire thread here about trying out Jane Crowfoot crochet patterns. Gorgeous florals in the mix. More people should see your thread!
@PhoenixSerenity @irene
Thank you, I'm still persevering with the pattern the last motif is almost complete then it's onto piecing it all together😁
Hey, UK people: anyone have contact with either the UK bank Onefamily, or a UK financial ombudsman? We opened a savings account with them 18 years ago for our daughter's education and now they will not release the funds to her US bank account because they require specific paperwork that NO US bank is capable of producing. It's been months and we're running out of options.
Note that I'm NOT looking for advice on how to get US banks to satisfy the paperwork requirements. Please only chime in if you have relevant contact/experience with either Onefamily or the relevant UK regulators, or if you are a solicitor with relevant experience and ideas for compelling them to take action. Thank you!

I've been thinking about this, and I'd like to see people's little shelves/collections of trinkets and nature stuff. Here's mine.
https://turtleisland.social/@dillyd/117385270266352638
@dillyd Just knowing that other folks have a thing like this makes me happy. I have some satisfying pebbles in a tiny dish in my bedroom, and an elk's tooth in a box somewhere, but these treasures are out on shelves in my dining room!
@dillyd I'll try to post photos ! Mine are a bit all over the place, including in clothing drawers (fragrant stuff like bits of solidified resin, bits of wood, cypress and juniper cones...)
I really like collecting small bits from walks or holidays, they're the best souvenirs !
@dillyd i keep a small collection on my desk for fidgetting with. there are other collections elsewhere
@dillyd I have these and a box with other things nature. The taxidermied wasp and the pinned moth are my own first two tries in preserving insects I found dead around the apartment building. The assorted stuff used to lay around and then I thought it would look cute in jars. It doesn't but now I'm used to it.
@dillyd I have this little weird oyster-shaped cup, that contains some pearls that we collected from all the mussels we foraged at the local beach.
@dillyd What's interesting in your post and the replies is that all of us kind of find the same stuff interesting to put on a shelf. That's cool, that all sorts of different people look at a nice cone and go "oh that is a GOOD cone, I'm gonna put this on my shelf"
@weirdmustard @dillyd I also know lots of kids that do that. When they don't have lots of experience, *every* stone is fascinating, as parents will be able to confirm. Definitely something that's deep within us.
(Also, dangerous for all family washing machines!)
@dillyd here's mine, mostly pebbles. There are more small pots of carnelian in the house as can't help pick up the littles gems from the beach.
@dillyd Here's mine:
The rust colored potsherd in the lower right corner was gifted to me by a friend who'd been to the Middle East; he said it was from Caesarea & is 2,000 years old.
@dillyd my four year old had something like two hundred chestnut in a plastic box 🤣. Sorry I can't take a picture, we gave it back to nature a few days ago.
@dillyd My treasures, in a type case :)
Shells, rocks, precious gifts, pretty stamps, beercaps I find nice, a miniature book, foreign coins, found bits and bob... Also a dead wasp I picked up this summer.
@temptoetiam @dillyd In a beer glass for some of ours, mostly nature stuff and few homemade trinkets :)
@temptoetiam @dillyd meant to post this the other day but could not find the link.
your wonderful collection reminded me of a painting by a local artist Tiffany Bozic
https://tiffanybozic.com/the-fragile-key/cabinet-of-curiosities
@dillyd My ever-changing wall decoration as it stands now (or did a couple of weeks ago, on the equinox).
(The ivy garland thing going around it is plastic, but everything else you see is natural stuff I’ve picked up near my home, or sometimes quite far away.)
@dillyd OMG I love this so much and seeing the others.
I cannot seem to upload my photo, but my my wunderkammer is so important to me that I spent a long time carefully packing it up so that all the rocks and seed pods and feathers and shells would survive a cross-country move unharmed.
@dillyd here's one of my bowls of rocks, mostly from the Leslie Street Spit (an artificial peninsula built on leftover construction rubble)
@dillyd sooo... How do all of you keep all these collections so dust-free, is what I ask myself? Or did you all wipe them off for the photos? Really curious, because I have a few corners with rocks, and they catch dirt like magnets.
@lizzard @dillyd It's late and dark here, so prob no photos today, but if I found a good vignette I'd probably dust first if not actually wash...lol (wood stove here, plant dust, some water leaks, etc...) just like pulling weeds before garden photos, any photo op is a good chance for a (very localised) tidying..lol
@dillyd Needs dusting, but left to right, lava from Utah, lava from Oahu, green geode from Salt Lake desert, two stones from Oregon dunes shore
@dillyd Love the dishes and the collection.
Here are some of mine, in a box.
Shell, rough rounded stone, angular calcite crystal, cubic fool's gold, river-worn bark flake, acorn, black walnut shell, another calcite.
@dillyd Hi there. Perhaps you'd like to show off your trinkets at a new project I'm trying out. Nothing commercial at all, just an idea I'm hoping catches on. If you have a moment to try it out, it's at theburrow.live - I'd love to hear your thoughts.
@dillyd Some bought, some collected, but all of it natural. It's comforting having these materials at home as decor. I have these in various places, just collected them for the picture.
@dillyd My favorite nature based trinket - a lapel pin my late father in law made from shells while stationed in the South Pacific during WWII
@dillyd I had to take the « interesting nature stuff » from the « interesting stuff » box so there’s no pretty organization but here they are. Mainly rocks and fossiles and my herbarium :/
@dillyd
some of the collections (yours are much less dusty than ours)
The capys might not be quite a collection of trinkets, but everyone agrees that a capybara lights up the room!
(I saw one of the little bouncing capys on a cabbie's dash in Oaxaca and got some when we returned home.)
@dillyd one of my rock shelves - a window sill - with a token piece of wood because I liked the hole. Smaller, lighter nature finds have to be more securely treasured, lest they become a cat/dog play thing.
I love your Haida plates/trays. Do you know if they available to buy anywhere online? I've got some small Haida plates in natural browns, but those black ones are beautiful.
@dillyd That's a sweet collection! I've had a handful of acorns & hats (know what I mean, the tops without the nut, lol) sitting on the windowsill behind my kitchen sink. When I do dishes I see them & it makes me so happy. The tree they came from had to be cut down last year so the acorns mean a lot.
@dillyd I'll have to think about sharable instances-- I have so much of this stuff all over, mostly messy, stuffed between plants etc...lol
@dillyd and this is a very dusty place where we have some natural things gathered from parks and beaches over the years that were special to us!
@dillyd here's a part of my mantle, it's not nature but things that have been important to my family and I along the way!
@dillyd My hole flat is full of all kind of collected natural stuff, it’s overgrowing!! These are my wasp nests:
@dillyd I've got stuff spread out all over, but this is my current favorite.
Black lava sand from Iceland, with various rocks and shells. Also a small black and gold feather.
@dillyd I also keep an herbarium, losely themed on imperfections, being eaten, reabsorbed, death and rebirth, but also just the beauty of natural forms in general
@dillyd here's mine ☺️ next to my work desk to remind me of what's important! I may have a problem with not leaving pretty feathers where I find them.... maybe...
@dillyd
I will need more than just one picture
@dillyd
... More than just four as well, it seems
(Second picture is an overview of the cupboard the previous pictures were taken from)
@dillyd This is a small flower pot on our fence post. Containing pebbles we find on our walks. And a piece of a plastic pen.
@dillyd I have a bit of bark that seems to be where I store stray pegs, like some tiny coolamon! And a coaster i found on the ground after tree trimming.
Late to the thread, but it made me remember this pretty little shell I have kept since 1999, mostly because I took one of my favorite photos of it, lying on the sand with the waves churning around it.
Somewhere on Florida's east coast, in the last milenium.
My collection of agate and flint pebbles are not ready for viewing, having recently fallen in a tumbler.
@Barbramon1 @dillyd I love this.
I have bowls of rocks that I keep meaning to get pics of…
@Devils_Rancher @dillyd I have many, many rocks and shells and pieces of wood and other found stuff in boxes.
I have collected all my life. When downsizing from a much bigger home, I couldn't
bear to part with my treasures. I could do a rotating display, but it seems like a lot of work.
@Barbramon1 @dillyd I have a habit of picking up stream cobbles from river passages in caves - just a few, because rocks are heavy and what goes down into the cave must climb back up. 😀
I also have a bowl of beach rocks collected over the years at my Granny’s house in Oregon. Oh hey, I have a pic of it on my phone already!

When black holes evaporate, their event horizons shrink.
If those horizons get small enough, could they possibly reveal some object other than a singularity at their cores?

How far would you go to right a wrong? ‘The House With 46 Chimneys’ is a spooky adventure story for younger readers involving a two-century-old family mystery and the haunting of Dunmore Park, a ruined house in central Scotland.
What lies beyond the yellow door? More than you might think, and much more than the book’s young characters expect as they explore the neglected and heavily overgrown ruined stable block at Dunmore Park.
